How to apply
- Public housing and Section 8 vouchers: apply through the housing agency for your city or county. Most have waiting lists that open only at certain times.
- Subsidized apartments: contact each building’s office directly. Every building keeps its own waiting list, and you can apply to several.
- Lotteries: register and apply on the city’s lottery site. Applications are ordered at random after the deadline, so timing does not matter; one application per household per lottery.
- In every case household size, income and identity are verified, so have your documents ready. Waits can be months, and years in high-demand areas.
